Are you interested in diversifying your crop with a community of growers?

Do you want a profitable crop with a small amount of land for future generations?

Do you want a “money printing machine” on your farm?

Angela McDonald, President of the US League of Tea Growers and owner of Oregon Tea Traders, and Jason McDonald, owner of The Great Mississippi Tea Company are teaming up to host a local gathering to help educate local producers about opportunities to grow tea in Oregon.

Oregon has proven to be a great geographical location for growing tea with tea being grown in Oregon since 1988. In addition to this, tea prefers conditions very similar to blueberries. Over 100 million pounds of blueberries were produced in Oregon in 2016 and the market is continuing to grow.

There is no reason that tea cannot become as much of a wide scale crop as blueberries in Oregon. According to Peter Goggi, President of the US Tea Association, “While still very small and generally non-commercial, tea growing continues its expansion in the U.S., in some instances, serving to answer the call of locally grown and farm-to-table trends.”

Oregon has long been on the forefront of food innovation across the country. There exists a unique opportunity to follow industries, such as wine, coffee, and craft beers, and to create our own unique, local flavor and style of tea different from teas found anywhere in the world.

Growing and processing tea have long been viewed as roadblocks for beginning tea growers and tea makers entering the industry. Over the last seven years, The Great Mississippi Tea Company has created a model to grow, process, and market teas for a domestic and global market. In a short period of time, they have won 6 awards (Global Tea Championship, 2017 and 2018 / Teas of the United States Awards, 2015) for the quality and taste of their teas. Their teas are rapidly becoming the benchmark by which US teas are compared.
