Micah Elconin, Director of Eugene’s Table writes a regular column for the Register Guard that highlights his perspectives on regional F&B business.

There’s no shortage of high quality, locally produced libations at happy hours throughout the Eugene-Springfield area. Our breweries, wineries, cideries and distilleries produce world-class beverages, attracting consumers from all over the world, and employ hundreds of local professionals who are building meaningful careers. Tasting trails dot the maps of those seeking to try all our area has to offer, and our local producers steadfastly support community organizations. Yes, the Eugene area is a beverage hotspot.

Not so obvious, however, beyond our more niche circles, is that another beverage category has risen to substantial excellence locally: tea. Its makers and purveyors are often humble, in similar fashion to the beverage their work celebrates, and yet play a vital role within our community and for those with whom they work. They are herbalists, travelers, environmentalists and community organizers, building brands with heart and making significant economic impacts.
